Prescription drug abuse is the nation’s fastest growing drug problem. Studies now show that prescription pain relievers are now the second most abused category of drugs after marijuana, and one of the growing, most deadly categories is opioid pain relievers.

From 1997 to 2007, the milligram per person use of prescription opioids in the US increased from 74 milligrams to 369 milligrams. And between 2000 and 2009, prescriptions dispensed increased from 174 million to 257 million, an increase of more than 48 percent. Read more
