How Chiropractic Can Help TMJ 1024x682 How Chiropractic Can Help TMJ

Think chiropractic is only for back pain? Think again.  Chiropractic care could also be highly effective in other areas of personal discomfort…including TMJ.

What is TMJ?

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (also known as TMJ) is a condition that affects the jaw.  This condition can be very painful at times and tends to disrupt an individual’s normal daily routine.  You might be suffering from TMJ if you have any of the following symptoms:

Pain that radiates through the face, neck, jaw, and back.

Grinding or clicking when opening or closing the mouth.

A loss of motion or locking of the jaw.

An alteration in the way the upper and lower teeth fit together.

Headaches, earaches, dizziness, hearing problems, or difficulty swallowing.

How can a doctor of Chiropractic help with TMJ?

If you suffer from TMJ, a doctor of Chiropractic can help you in two ways.

Diagnosis:
A doctor of Chiropractic can perform tests to help determine whether your symptoms and discomfort are the result of TMJ or another issue.  A few of the tests a doctor of Chiropractic may use to diagnose TMJ would likely include:

Placing three fingers in your mouth and biting down.

Repeatedly opening and closing your jaw.

Chewing.

As you perform these tasks the doctor of Chiropractic take note of the balance of your muscles and the dimensions of your jaw.

Treatment:

If, after these tests are completed, the doctor of Chiropractic diagnoses you with TMJ, they will then begin a course of treatment intended to relieve the symptoms of your condition.  These treatments may include Chiropractic manipulation, massaging, and strengthening exercises.
