Many asthma sufferers seek asthma help through a range of treatments. From emergency inhalers to vaporizer treatments, allergy shots to daily oral medication, people with asthma are willing to go to great lengths to control their asthma symptoms. In addition to primary care doctors and allergy specialists, chiropractors may also be able to offer asthma help to those with the chronic breathing condition.

It seems a bit counterintuitive to visit a chiropractor, whose specialty is in bones and muscles, for asthma help, but chiropractors also specialize in restricted blood and nerve pathways. Spinal realignments are intended to properly align the vertebra to reduce constricted blood vessels and nerves. Blood vessels and nerves that are impaired reduce the effectiveness of several body systems because of the reduced capacity to transmit oxygenates blood or signals from the brain.

Several research studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of chiropractic treatments for asthma control. Dr. Ray Hayek of Iowa conducted a study in which over four hundred asthma sufferers were given a range of manual therapy treatments for symptom management. He found that the patient group that received spiral alignments showed the most improvement in symptoms, suggesting that chiropractors can be utilized for asthma treatment.

The precise reasoning behind the promising results are not entirely clear, but many experts believe that spinal alignments improve overall immune system function and therefore reduce the likelihood of asthma attacks. Though the fact remains that asthma has no cure, research suggests that the benefits of chiropractic medicine extends beyond what had been previously believed. Chiropractics are no longer relegated to the world of bone and muscle treatment; with one more treatment plan in the queue, asthma patients may just breathe a little easier.

What is an asthma attack?

If you’ve ever experienced one with your own child, you know just how scary they can be. Asthma is a disorder in which the airway becomes inflamed, resulting in wheezing, loss of breath, and a tightness in the chest. During an asthma attack, the airway becomes constricted, and breathing becomes difficult and labored.

While no one knows for sure what causes asthma, we do know that asthma attacks can be triggered by exposure to certain conditions. Children will exhibit severe coughing and wheezing, and begin feeling a tightness in the chest and a shortness of breath. Triggers can include many things, including:

Cigarette smoke

Cleaning products

Pesticides

Molds

Dust

Pollens

Strong emotions

Stress

Infections of the respiratory system

While the prevalence of asthma has been increasing every year in this country, it’s increasing at an especially alarming rate in children over the past 10 years. With more asthma drugs and allergy shots on the market, why is this happening? Study after study proves there are no significant benefits with shots given to children for moderate to sever asthma. Ultimately its because medication isn’t addressing the true problem.

Chiropractic care focuses on the well being of the entire person. If a misalignment is corrected and managed properly, a child can often return to normal childhood behavior, without having to rely on medication that is ineffective and simply doesn’t work.

Ready to explore a natural treatment for your child suffering with asthma? Give us a call today. We specialize in children and family chiropractic care, and welcome the chance to get you back on track to good health.
