Stress. In today’s society, its everywhere. Its no longer something that “the other guy” experiences; it’s a fact of life for all of us.

Although stress can occasionally be a benefit to us, help improve our focus or make our performance even better, for the most part stress can lead to serious health problems that will impact us the rest of our lives. Anxiety, depression, heart attacks, virtually every chronic situation people now live with on a daily basis are impacted by the amount of stress we bring into our lives.

The first step is realizing where your stressful situations are coming from.how chiropractic can be a part of your stress relief management program1 How Chiropractic Can Be A Part Of Your Stress Relief Management Program

The second is to eliminate the stressful situations, and put healthy alternatives in its place.

Think Positive

Sounds easy enough; yet most of us fall into the trap of thinking negative throughout the day. Have you ever found yourself saying “how stupid can you be” or “that was a dumb thing to do” over and over again? Instead of focusing in on the bad, retrain your brain to think positively instead. When you replace negative thoughts with constructive ones, stress can easily fade away.

Meditate

There’s a saying out there that everyone should meditate 10 minutes a day; and if you’re too busy, you should meditate 20 minutes per day. The idea is to take 10 minutes to do nothing, relax and spend time on your inner self.

Head Back To Nature

Noise is all around us in the heart of the city. Even if you walk from your office to a café for lunch every day, the horns honking, traffic buzzing by can grade on your nerves. Now step out to a park outside of town. Better yet, head up to the mountains and enjoy a trail or two. In a very short amount of time, you’ll notice the difference inside and out.

Hobbies

Today we’re too wrapped up in what needs to be done. We rush from one thing to the next without taking time for the little things we enjoy. Stop one or two of the activities that keep you busy, and instead put in its place something you’ve enjoyed in the past but let go because of a lack of time. It could be knitting, gardening or skiing. The more you separate from the stuff that keeps you busy, the stuff that adds to your stress, the more you will find relief in the down time.

Human Touch

We live in a social world. Unfortunately, social has now taken on the meaning of having “friends” online, when in reality we’re too busy to spend time with the friends right in our own backyard. Virginia Satir, a famous family psychotherapist once said that a person needs 4 hugs a day for survival, 8 for maintenance, and 12 for growth. Yet how many of us get anywhere close to that during the course of a normal day? Massage can play a big part, and the therapeutic properties are proven again and again. It can lead to less pain, reduce depression and anxiety, allow for better sleep, and improve your happiness factor.

Combine all of that with regular visits to your chiropractor. A chiropractors job is to make sure your body is fully functioning, fully adjusted, and working at its optimal level. A body that works correctly means it responds correctly. And you can more easily focus on the areas that mean most to you.

Every chiropractic office in your neighborhood is unique. Every chiropractor has his or her own perspective on how to approach health and well being, and what chiropractic techniques to offer his or her clientele. Some perform joint manipulation with their hands, while others prefer to use various instruments. Some patients prefer the feeling of relief from popping the joints into place, while others cringe at the thought and prefer a lighter touch.

3 questions to ask before visiting a chiropractor 3 Questions To Ask Before Visiting A Chiropractor

In short, there is no right or wrong approach to chiropractic treatment. Instead, it depends on both the individual preferences of both the chiropractor and the patient.

But what do you do when you’re new to the chiropractic world, and you aren’t sure what method you prefer? How do you find someone you can trust when the entire practice is something you’re only recently learning about?

Start with 3 questions, and use them to determine the right chiropractor for you.

1. What are my goals for seeing a chiropractor?

Everyone sees a chiropractor for a different reason. Some are trying to find relief for pain; some are simply trying to improve their well being. Before you talk with a chiropractor for the first time, make sure you can summarize all of the reasons you are searching out chiropractic expertise. Then talk with potential chiropractors about their practice and how it aligns with your goals. Choose the chiropractor that most resonates with your objectives.

2. What should I avoid when looking for a chiropractor?

While every chiropractor offers a unique approach to chiropractic, there are some red flags that most chiropractors agree are questionable.

  • Avoid chiropractors that claim to “cure” a condition, such as asthma, infections, diabetes or other chronic conditions.
  • Avoid chiropractors that claim to be the only one with a technique no other chiropractor is using.
  • Avoid chiropractors that advertise “one treatment fits all” specials, treating all ailments the same.
  • Avoid long term treatments where goals aren’t evaluated along the way.

If you find any of the above, or simply aren’t comfortable with the approach your chiropractor is taking, it is reasonable to consider switching to another chiropractor.

3. How should I evaluate my treatment plan?

It is not uncommon to have mild discomfort after adjustment for the first 24 hours or so … in a similar manner when you start a new exercise regiment for the first time. Beyond that, if you experience any pain during treatment or increased pain following adjustment, you should stop and re-evaluate your treatment plan.

If you aren’t seeing a change within 2 to 4 weeks of the initial treatment, a good chiropractor will also consider other alternatives, such as treating the problem area with a different technique or adding additional sessions to your program. He may also provide referrals to other healthcare providers to approach your pain in a different manner, such as an acupuncturist, massage therapist, or naturopath.

Above all, if you have questions, ask at any time. A great chiropractor will always welcome your input, and provide you with the relief and services best for you.

Pregnancy is an exciting time for all expectant moms.

Its also a time when more than half of all moms to be will experience pain, especially in the last few weeks. Lower back pain, leg pain, and even pain in the buttocks can all be experienced as the baby’s head presses down, irritating her sciatic nerve. For those that already had lower back pain prior to pregnancy, the problem can become even worse.

As a woman’s pregnancy evolves, her center of gravity begins to shift towards the front of her pelvis. The woman’s weight continues to shift forward throughout the weeks of development, increasing the curvature of her lower back and placing added stress on the spinal disks.

This is a normal process, one the body understands and compensates for. Pregnancy hormones help loosen the ligaments attached to the pelvic bone, making room for the growing baby.

Yet even though it’s a natural process, living with the aches and pains can in some cases take away from the overall experience.

And that’s where good health and chiropractic care come into play.

Chances are no matter what you’ve done to maintain your health before, throughout this process you are paying closer attention to everything you do.

Eating right is always a good idea, but especially now make sure you are getting a wide variety of nutrients on a daily basis. Exercise can be especially helpful to help strengthen your muscles and prevent discomfort. Get plenty of rest, sleeping on your side with a pillow between your legs to take the pressure of your lower back.

If you are contemplating becoming pregnant, seeing a chiropractor first can help detect any imbalances in your pelvis or elsewhere in your body that would contribute to discomfort during pregnancy.

After you become pregnant, adjustments every week or two can provide relief from the increased lower back pain as your pregnancy progresses.

And after childbirth, chiropractic care can get you back on track as the ligaments loosened during pregnancy return to their normal state. It can help prevent muscle tension, headaches back pain, even shoulder problems that may have occurred over time.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome – or IBS as it is sometimes referred – is a common disorder that affects the large intestine, or colon. It commonly causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating gas, diarrhea and constipation.

While its not completely known what causes irritable bowel syndrome, it is believed to stem from an abnormal movement of food through the intestines. The walls of the intestines are lined with layers of muscle that relax and contract as they move food from your stomach through your intestinal tract.can chiropractic help irritable bowel syndrome Can Chiropractic Help Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

If you have IBS, the contractions may be stronger and last longer than normal. Because food is forced through the process quicker than normal, it causes the feeling of being bloated, causes gas, or diarrhea.

Or in some cases, the opposite occurs. Contractions are weaker and are shorter than normal, meaning food stays within your system longer. When food moves slower, it causes cramping and constipation.

Many of these abnormalities are also believed to be cause by abnormalities in your nervous system as well, which will cause discomfort as your abdomen stretches from gas.

Women are twice as likely to have IBS, and researchers believe this may be due to hormonal changes in a woman’s body. Many women find their symptoms go up or are worse during and around their menstrual periods. It is also impacted by certain types of foods – for instance milk and alcohol may cause diarrhea or constipation. Still others find their symptoms increase when they are in a stressful situation.

Obvious ways of reducing the effects of IBS are to lower your stress levels, and watch what you eat. If you find somethings impacts you, reduce that in your daily diet.

Traditional doctors may point you to treatments that focus on relief of the symptoms rather than getting to the root of the problem. Some treatments may include anti-diarrhea drugs, anticholinergic drugs, and even anti-depressants. Bear in mind that drugs always have their own set of side effects, some fatal, so beware before you approach these methods.

From a more natural standpoint, I prefer to work with my clients in a number of ways. Proper diet, stress management and chiropractic care can all help change the way you live your daily life. Proper diet can include eliminating any foods that are causing sensitivity, as well as increasing food rich in fiber. A good probiotic can introduce friendly bacteria into your digestive tract, helping reduce the harmful bacteria that’s already there.

And chiropractic care can focus in on the movement between your nervous sytem and your digestive system. Most medical doctors will tell you that with IBS there is a dysfunction in the muscles of your intestines that cause food to move to quickly or too slow. This movement is controlled by your parasympathetic nervous system. These nerves leave your spine in your lower back and go down to your intestines. If there is a problem with your lower back, it can impact how the intestinal muscles function.

Can’t sleep? It may be time to buy a new mattress!

tips for buying a new mattress Tips for Buying a New MattressThe best mattress is one that allows you to get a solid night’s sleep without pain or tossing and turning. Sound too good to be true? Well, it’s easy when you know beforehand what the mattress buying process entails and how to find a good mattress.

Do your homework:

·       Know how much you want to spend. Before you even step into a mattress store, be sure you have a clear idea of how much you can afford to spend. Remember, an expensive price tag does not always mean it’s a great mattress. Everyone is different and requires different things for a great night sleep.

·       Ask family and friends for suggestions. Or, look online for reviews of a particular mattress or mattress store. Or talk with your chiropractor; he can make suggestions for things to look for and things to avoid.

·       Consider your favorite beds. If you sleep like a rock on the hotel’s bed or friend’s guest bed, find out what kind of mattress it is. Use this as a starting point in your search for the perfect mattress.

·       Be on the lookout for sales. Many stores have big sales on holidays such as Fourth of July and Memorial Day.

Have an in-store game plan:

·       Bring your partner. If you share a bed with someone else, be sure to bring him or her along. After all, if you are both going to be sleeping on it, the bed should be comfortable for both of you.

·       Make sure the salesperson knows your needs. If you have a bad back or hate pillowtops, let them know. Their job is to sell you the best mattress for you. If you feel uncomfortable at one store, leave. There are many options out there in today’s world.

·       Spend a lot of time in the store. A good mattress is a big investment for some, so make sure you test all of the mattresses out that you are interested in.

When you have selected your favorite mattress, be sure to read the fine print when you make your purchase. Different stores have varying warranties and return policies. Check with the mattress store to see if they offer a comfort guarantee.

Suffering from stress, many Americans feel the negative effects from it every single day. In fact, many Americans actually suffer from chronic stress, which is a higher degree of stress. Chronic stress leads to even higher negative effects and can potentially lead to a negative way of living.

will chiropractic adjustments relieve stress Will Chiropractic Adjustments Relieve Stress?Such negative effects of stress include insomnia, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, bowel problems, muscle tension and even migraines. Fighting the symptoms can be extremely difficult if you are not targeting the main problem, which is eliminating stress altogether. With so many Americans looking for practical solutions to chronic stress, many are wondering what works and what does not work.

In recent years, people have been looking at Chiropractic adjustments to determine whether or not this will reduce stress. For some, they still hear the old rumors of chiropractors not being “real” medical doctors, or its simply not an effective way to bring change into your life.

Are you one of the people that have avoided chiropractic because of the rumors and uncertainty?

Maybe its time for a change.

One of the many benefits of receiving chiropractic adjustments is pain relief. And its also one of the most common reasons people seek out a chiropractor. When everything else has been tried and a person is still living with pain, they begin to seek out alternatives. When chiropractic is used for pain relief, adjustments work at the root of the problem – not as a way to mask the symptoms. Chronic stresses such as migraines and back pains can be difficult at best to live with every day. And the more they are present, the more impact they have on the rest of your body. By relieving the overall pain, you will significantly see adjustments to your levels of stress.

You may also look at other things in your that may be impacting your stress level. Are work, family or friends causing high levels of stress? What can you do to reduce the daily impact?

Stress is almost always caused by internal and external factors. Chiropractic care can work to make sure your body is adjusted and functioning in a proper way. Then its up to you to look at the external factors and make changes to your life there as well.

It may entail doing other things such as meditation and yoga, which can also greatly reduce the risk of stress. It may be making changes to your work load. It may be making changes to your relationships.

But once your internal system is functioning and working at optimal level, you’ll feel well enough to put your energy elsewhere.

  • Get plenty of rest. Sleeping is the body’s natural way of healing and restoring itself. Make sure you get at least 8 full hours of restful sleep every night to help keep your body healthy. A good book, a warm bath, and a quiet atmosphere should do the trick.
  • Watch what you eat. Sure, you paid attention during swimsuit season, but you might find yourself tempted to eat more during the colder weather. After all, you will be bundled up in warm clothes and coats, so who will notice a few extra pounds, right? Eating a well-balanced diet will help ensure that your body receives all of the nourishment, vitamins, and proteins it needs to keep your immune system strong.
  • Visit your chiropractor for a nervous system checkup. You may not think about it much, but your nervous system connects to every inch of your body. A chiropractic treatment will keep your spine in perfect alignment and balance to keep you pain-free during the winter.
  • Get plenty of exercise. Avoid being a couch potato just because it is cold outside. Visit the gym or workout in the comfort of your own home. Even a brisk walk in the cold air will not only invigorate you, but will also help keep you in good physical shape during the colder months.
  • Stay positive. Your mental outlook on life has a huge effect on your overall health. Think healthy, stay active, and make good lifestyle choices – you will have a most enjoyable winter!

Benefits of Chiropractic for Senior Citizens Benefits of Chiropractic for Senior Citizens

This week we’re helping celebrate Senior Citizens Day by offering you some tips on why chiropractic is equally beneficial for the maturing adult as it is for children, teens and younger adults.

As a body ages, dramatic changes occur in the spine. If you have a parent or grandparent that you watch stoop over from old age and osteoporosis, you’ve seen what old age can do. As we age, the spine – spinal discs, joints, ligaments, muscles and other tissues – become weaker, less hydrated, more fibrotic, and less able to withstand the normal stresses that come with our daily lives. As a result, degeneration becomes more prominent, pain sets in, injury becomes easier than ever, and the actual time it takes to heal increases tenfold.

If you do nothing for your spinal health and wellness, the deterioration will continue. But by taking steps to stop and correct your spinal health as early as possible, you can and will start to see changes in the way your body moves and reacts. Read more

Pregnancy. Childbirth. Infancy.

how chiropractic helps infants How Chiropractic Helps InfantsIf you’ve been through these three stages, you know what an exciting time it is.

You also know how traumatic the experience can be.

During pregnancy, your body changes daily. Things move. You carry more weight. You move differently. You sleep and sit differently. All of it can take its toll on your body.

As your body changes with your growing baby, it is not uncommon to have more aches and pains, especially back pain. As you get farther and farther along, the tiny load you are carrying becomes larger, making it harder for you to get around in a comfortable manner.

Then comes childbirth. Again, the stress on your body is like nothing you’ve experienced before. And not only does childbirth impact your health, it also takes its toll on your baby’s.

Chiropractic treatments from beginning to end can help relieve some of the aches and pains associated with pregnancy. Once you have the baby, ongoing treatments can help you return to your pre-pregnancy body that much quicker. Chiropractic isn’t about solving a problem immediately. Instead, its about making sure your body will always be in perfect alignment – and that means fewer aches and pains, and being healthy overall.

Keep in mind that while chiropractic is the perfect choice for you, its also the perfect choice for your baby. That’s right, infants can benefit from safe and effective chiropractic treatment just as much as you can.

Picture it – your little one is all twisted up inside of your womb for many months. It only makes sense that when he makes his entrance into the world, he may need a few adjustments to get his body back in perfect alignment. Chiropractic treatment in infants has been shown to reduce colic, ear infections and overall irritability.

As your baby grows, you can still opt for treatments once a month or once every few months just to keep everything in his body and spine aligned. After all, he will be growing and exploring, walking, and crawling – his body is likely to need some adjustments here and there.

With chiropractic care, you and your baby can both be in tip-top shape. Your baby will sleep more comfortably, feel better and be that much healthier – all thanks to the helpful relief offered by chiropractic treatment. For more information about treatments for your little one, contact us today and discuss a treatment plan for your baby. You just may be able to get a restful night’s sleep after your little one has been through a chiropractic treatment.

In today’s society, it is common for people to turn to medications or drugs to make themselves feel better. This is true for people that suffer from a headache, cold or other illness. There are various over-the-counter drugs readily available for almost any ailment that a person could suffer from, including medications for children. Unfortunately, this sends a poor message to children, teaching them that when something is wrong, there is likely a “pill to fix it”. Rather than sending this inappropriate message to your children, you can choose natural wellness with the help of chiropractic care.

Achieving Wellness

Chiropractic care is one way to promote the body’s natural ability to heal without the assistance of drugs. Contrary to popular belief, a chiropractor is not only for a person with back pain. These alternative physicians can help with almost any illness or injury. The main difference is they will not prescribe drugs; they will help to adjust your body’s central nervous system so it can function properly, allowing your body to heal from its pain and suffering. This allows you to send your children the message that you can heal your body on your own, without the harmful side effects of drugs. Read more
