In a report put out last week by The President’s Cancer Panel, we’re finally coming to a realization as a nation that what you put into your body has the ultimate affect on how healthy your lifestyle will be.

In 2009, approximately 1.5 million American men, women, and children were diagnosed with cancer, and 562,000 died from the disease. According to the report, a growing body of evidence links what we come into contact with in our environment ultimately determines our risk for cancer.

The study goes on to suggest that in addition to preventative measures, such as doctor visits, self examinations and screenings, we should also be increasing the way we approach a healthy lifestyle. Buy organic foods whenever possible, check radon levels in your home, and microwave food in glass containers rather than plastic.

In other words, its time to step up to the plate, and take charge of the way we look at our health, and the way we currently live our lives.

Health and Wellness Instead of Chemicals and Cancer

Instead of being reactive – finding solutions after we’ve been diagnosed with a problem – its time to find the solution first.

As new studies and legislation come forward, use them to make changes in your life.

Avoid using plastics made with bishpenol-A, better known as BPA, found in many beverage and food containers.

Continue with self examinations and screenings, that can find problems early, and help you get the treatment you need before it turns into high risk.

Make chiropractic a part of your regular routine. Chiropractic works on wellness, and works to keep your spine and nerve system in top shape. Because your spine and nerve system are core to your overall health, even a small injury can have big impact on your health. Correcting nerve dysfunction can improve your health, and allow you to get back into life.

I heard a commercial on the radio today that made a great point.  I don’t remember what the commercial was for, but it went something like this:

Boss to secretary – “What’s my schedule like for today?”

Secretary replies – “You have a 9 o’clock with the attorney, a lunch meeting with Jim, and don’t forget your car accident at 2:30.  Would you like a fender bender or a head on collision?”

Chiropractic Care Centennial

The moral of the story is – we don’t plan accidents and surprises.  Wouldn’t it be convenient if we could plan for the unseen before it happened?  It would make our lives much easier.

Guess what?  In a way, you can plan for the unseen (some of the time).

Have you ever said, “I know I need to exercise more and eat better” or “I know I need to schedule regular chiropractic appointments and take better care of myself, I just don’t have the time.”

Sooner or later your body is going to demand you take care of yourself (usually in the form of a disease or pain crisis) and I guarantee it will be less convenient than it would be if you schedule it now.  Imagine throwing serious disease into your already busy schedule – how will you fit it in then?

Instead of waiting for the unexpected, plan for the unforeseen now.  If you do not take care of yourself like you know that you should, it will catch up with you.  It doesn’t take a psychic.

Take the time, be proactive and take charge of your health direction.

You don’t want to start worrying about your health on the day your secretary says, “Don’t forget you have a heart attack scheduled for 3:00.”

The US Census Bureau estimates that there over 80,000 centenarians living in the United States today.   Statistics show that women usually live longer than men. The truth is, your body has the genetic potential to live to 100 and beyond.  Being prepared to age gracefully, healthfully and successfully has never been more important than now.  Every day we are faced with choices that contribute to our quality of life both now and in the future.  One of the most important steps you can take to begin to live longer and stronger is to. . . Chiropractic Care For A Woman's Health Program

Stop Killing Yourself!
Heart disease, cancer and stroke are the three leading causes of death among women. Interestingly enough, they are also preventable by healthy lifestyle choices and routine check-ups.  Mark your calendar so you won’t forget mammograms, chiropractic visits, and other annual exams. Many women are more likely to be familiar with their family history. Let your doctor know what diseases and conditions are on your family tree. Being aware of this health history will help you and your healthcare team build a plan to incorporate healthy habits in your life and the lives of your children.

Make Your Self-Care a Priority
When reviewing disaster plans of action, flight attendants on airplanes always instruct parents to fit themselves with oxygen masks first before helping their children. The lesson is simple. You can’t take care of others unless you take care of yourself first, at least in matters of health.

Winning often comes down to reacting faster than your opponent by only a few seconds.  In the quest to beat the competition, there is hardly a sport which hasn’t been tarnished by allegations of participants enhancing their performance with steroidal drugs.  Yet, there is a chemical-free way you can improve your game that does not have the serious side effects of steroids.  Whether you are a top athlete or are working on integrating some healthy activity in your life, chiropractic care can help keep your spine balanced and your nerve system functioning at 100%, improving your performance dramatically.

Famous athletes who are chiropractic advocates can be found in nearly every sport, such as Emmitt Smith and Terrell Owens (football), Lance Armstrong (cycling), Arnold Schwarzenegger (bodybuilding), John Stockton (basketball) and Evander Holyfield (boxing).

Throughout the U.S., about 30 million children and teens participate in organized sports every single year. Just over 3 million injuries occur each year, which cause some time lost in participation.

children and sports injuries

All sports have the risk for injury. But how a child recovers depends on the injury he or she sustains, and what type of program he or she is put on for recovery.

For a severe sprain or broken bone, the road to recovery is clear. But how about for the twists, strains, bumps and bruises that may have an unnoticed affect on how well a body recovers?

That’s where chiropractic care comes into the equation.

As a general rule, when a child is growing at a rapid pace, he is more susceptible to injury at the bone growth sites – heel, knee, back, hip, shoulder and elbow. Growth occurs at the upper and lower end of the bones within these areas. Eventually the cartilage like cells that make up this bone growth will harden into bone mass. But as growth occurs, these areas are softer, and more susceptible to breakage.

A child also faces a variety of strains to the muscle area, just by doing the things kids normally do.

The goal of chiropractic care is to lessen the likelihood of injury. A chiropractor can provide adjustments, stretches and therapeutic exercises that a child can perform before, during and after sports activities to lower the risk. He can also coach a child on proper nutrition, proper training, proper equipment, and the importance of warm ups. A child may listen to someone in authority, especially if it impacts the way he plays and the chance of him moving into a more competitive environment.

While it is common knowledge that people suffering from depression are more likely to attempt suicide, did you know that many antidepressant drugs, which are intended to alleviate depression, have been linked to increased suicide rates?  According to an article in the May 15th, 2000 issue of the Boston Globe, internal documents from Eli Lilly and Co. showed that the firm had been aware for years that their antidepressant drug, Prozac, could cause suicidal reactions in a small, but significant, number of patients.  Dr. David Healy of the University of Wales estimates that, “Probably 50,000 people have committed suicide on Prozac since its launch, over and above the number who would have done so if left untreated.”

Furthermore, did you know that doctors may prescribe drugs to children even if the medications have not been shown to be beneficial or safe for children?  There is an increasing trend among physicians and psychologists to do just that since nearly all pharmaceutical company research on antidepressant drugs has been limited to adults.  Only Prozac has been tested on children and found to have benefits by Eli Lilly.  However, the side effects may be detrimental to a child’s healthy growth and development and include suicidal feelings, anxiety, insomnia, weight loss and headaches.

antidepressants and children

Many are now questioning the practice of prescribing antidepressant drugs to children.  In October 2003, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a health advisory alerting physicians to a possible link between antidepressant drugs and suicidal feelings in the young.  An article from the British Medical Journal contained a clinical review that found “significant shortcomings” in using antidepressants such as Effexor, Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft in those under 18 years old.  These researchers concluded that, “Antidepressant drugs cannot confidently be recommended as a treatment option for childhood depression,” and that due to biased reporting by drug manufacturers, “many [doctors, patients and families] will undervalue non-drug treatments that are probably both safer and more effective.”

Can chiropractic care really help those who suffer with Fibromyalgia?

Increasingly people are saying yes.

Fibromyalgia is a disorder of the muscles. Its main symptoms include muscle pain, tender points throughout the body, fatigue and sleeping disorders, and mild to severe depression. Fibromyalgia affects primarily women between the ages of 20 and 50, with current numbers showing around 3 to 6 million Americans currently diagnosed.

Chiropractic Care For Fibromyalgia Pain

In many cases, western medicine simply provides a prescription to try and reduce the symptoms. Because someone may be suffering from a variety of things, one pill can’t cover everything. So certain symptoms may persist.

Studies are repeatedly performed in which a comparison is made between drug treatment and lifestyle modifications. When a woman takes an active approach in changing her lifestyle – more exercise, change of the diet, rest and relaxation, and using wellness techniques such as chiropractic care – she will invariably see better results from the latter approach.

Chiropractic care helps by adjusting the spine, relieving the tension, and improving the way your nervous system talks to your body. Chiropractic care doesn’t cure fibromyalgia, or provide a quick fix to your health issues. Instead, its about adjusting the way your body functions, and bringing it back to optimal working order (or as close as possible).

If you’ve tried other approaches, and you just can’t seem to get relief, maybe its time for a new approach. Chiropractic care may be the help you’ve been looking for.

While you may know that chiropractic care can be very effective for addressing back and neck pain, you may not be aware of its affect on other issues, such as asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, or even pregnancy. Yet chiropractic care has helped resolve all of these issues, and many more.

Think of the spine as the control center for nerve flow. Even a slight change in your body can cause it to function at less than 100 percent. The longer you live performing at a less than 100 percent range, the more other things will begin developing throughout your body.

When a woman experiences nine months of pregnancy, everything changes. Not only is her body changing every day, it also impacts the baby.

chiropractic care for pregnancy and childbirth

Over the last few decades, artificial practices have changed the birth process from a natural physiological event to a very complicated medical procedure. Today, all kinds of drugs are utilized and invasive procedures carried out. These procedures are performed sometimes unnecessarily, and many are potentially harmful or damaging to the mother and unborn child alike.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Instead of relying on traditional medicine, you can opt to take a more natural approach, and include chiropractic care throughout the process. Chiropractic care can help you release unneeded tension, allowing for:

  • Better function
  • Decreased back and pelvic pain
  • Decreased labor time
  • Increased appreciation of the entire pregnancy process
  • Increased ease and comfort during labor and childbirth

Chiropractic care during your pregnancy should be at a level that is comfortable to you, and that helps you get ready for one of the most exciting times of your life.

As the weather warms here in Denver, many of us are digging the golf bag out of the garage or basement, and heading to the driving range to get ready for a summer of golfing. Hitting the driving range is a great way to start. But did you know another to-do on your list should be to see your chiropractor?

Around 75 percent of golfers on the PGA and Senior Tours receive regular chiropractic care. And according to some reports, up to 85 percent of all injuries on the tours relate to the spine. While you may not play as frequently, or swing as hard as the pros do, you still are at risk of developing spinal problems every time you head out onto the course.

Improve your Golf Game with Chiropractic CareA golf swing twists your body in ways you never do during other activities. And because you can easily swing 120 times or more during a single afternoon round of golf, hunch over the ball before each swing, and carry around a heavy golf bag across one shoulder for several hours, your body may soon start telling you something is wrong. From lower back pain, to shoulder and knee injuries, correct the problems early before they manifest into bigger issues.

If you see your chiropractor regularly, be sure to talk about your normal activities. If you golf once or twice per week, let him know. The more he understands about what you do, the more he can create a program that works best for you, and keeps you healthy and safe from potential injuries.

Not only can he provide you with regular chiropractic adjustments to keep your spine balanced and aligned, he can also provide you with specific stretching and strengthening exercises that will help keep you in top shape, and ready to face your next golf game in the best shape possible.
